NEW DOCUMENTARY FEATURE CHRONICLES WOMEN OF COLOR WHO ARE CHANGING THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE OF TEXAS—AND THE NATION
(Los Angeles-September 29, 2020) – THE PUSHBACK is a new documentary feature directed by Kevin Ford that explores the changing social and political landscape of the state of Texas, as increasing numbers of women of color engage the political process. THE PUSHBACK will drop on TVOD platforms, including Amazon Prime, Apple, and more, on October 6, 2020.
A special online premiere is scheduled for Monday October 5, featuring a live video chat moderated by Maria Teresa Kumar of VotoLatino and MSNBC, with Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and former congressman and presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke—both of whom are subjects of the film.
“After years of work on this film, we are thrilled about the upcoming TVOD release and honored that Congresswoman Escobar, former Congressman O’Rourke are able to join us in launching it; both have been incredibly inspiring to the process,” said filmmaker Kevin Ford. “In this pivotal moment in our nation’s history, nothing could be more important than an honest, inspiring conversation about the state of our democracy. We are grateful to these leaders for finding the time for this discussion just one month before election day.”
THE PUSHBACK showcases a growing phenomenon that might once have seemed rare, but is an increasingly common part of the American political story: women of color are changing politics and the balance of power nationwide. The film focuses on the first of two Latinas to represent Texas in Congress, Veronica Escobar, and the only African-American woman to run for city council in Austin in 2018, Natasha Harper-Madison.
Together, they lead a diverse group of progressive voices across Texas as they fight decades of institutional racism and policies of discrimination along the border. The battle over immigrant rights, land seizures to build the border wall, and the troubled racial history of the state form the backdrop to a film that explores how a place once known for its reactionary politics is becoming more liberal, more diverse — and more at risk for violent conflict.
“My hope is that releasing this film at this moment will highlight positive change and encourage productive engagement in our democracy, inspiring action in this election,” added Ford. “Without our participation our democracy will perish. It’s on us to to get involved—to get out and vote!”
THE PUSHBACK is supported by a national engagement campaign that encourages viewers to get involved this election season. To inform this effort, THE PUSHBACK campaign has compiled information, resources and actions in a free downloadable voter engagement guide to increase awareness about key issues related to voter engagement and participation.
