LA OLA celebrates its fourth edition expanding to Mexico

The annual event brings the best independent films from Spain to Los Angeles, New York, and Mexico City.

LA OLA – Independent Films from Spain offers a curated selection of critically acclaimed films, selected and awarded at the most remarkable international film festivals, which now have an opportunity to reach new audiences. The showcase celebrates its 4th edition, creating a bridge between Spain and the Americas. LA OLA has provided Los Angeles and New York with a window into the most innovative Spanish cinema, and in 2018 the film showcase hits Mexico City thanks to a collaboration with the prestigious Cineteca Nacional de Mexico.

LA OLA | LA will take place from May 31 to June 3 at the Egyptian Theatre, the Montalban Rooftop Cinema Club and The Echo Park Film Center, celebrating four consecutive years in the city of Los Angeles. The film showcase will continue with LA OLA | CDMX from June 8 to June 10 at the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico. The last stop of the event will be LA OLA | NYC from June 15 to June 18 at the Anthology Film Archives in New York. LA OLA will bring guests filmmakers from Spain in person to all the showcase’s venues. Besides the screenings and Q&As, LA OLA | LA will offer other activities like an industry panel and a masterclass, soon to be announced along with the 2018 programming.

The Spanish filmmaking scene is emerging as one of the most fertile and successful in Europe, with a new generation of Spanish filmmakers who are winning great acclaim at prestigious international film festivals (such as Locarno, Berlin, Rotterdam or Cannes). Despite their critical success, these groundbreaking Spanish films have struggled to gain access to the traditional distribution channels. LA OLA aims to bring a chance to those films to be exhibited in three of the world’s cultural capitals, a not-to-be-missed event for devotees of contemporary international cinema and a meeting point for two continents.
