Special: Signal Tide
September 23, 2017 @ 7:26 am - 8:26 am
LACMA | Hancock Park
Free and open to the public
Note: To ensure easy navigation and access to the work, it is strongly recommended that guests park in on the lot on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard at Spaulding Avenue. The $16 charge may be prepaid at a pay station located in the lot. After parking, cross Wilshire Boulevard and inform the guard at the gate that you are attending the Signal Tide installation and follow the signs to the event.
“Signal Tide” is a sound and extraterrestrial radio installation artwork, which combines real-time signals from an abandoned satellite, currently orbiting the earth, with specially-commissioned music and sound. It is the culmination of over two years of research and development by 2016 Art + Technology Lab grant recipients Kovács/O’Doherty, and features music created by David Bryant (of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Hiss Tracts), Drew Barnet, and James Hamilton, in collaboration with Kovács/O’Doherty.
The artists will capture the erratic signals of the LES-1 satellite, launched in 1965, and broadcast them in real-time, alongside a musical “answering” signal, as the satellite passes above the site of the installation, outdoors, underneath LACMA’s Pavilion for Japanese Art.
