VERVE FORECAST

FEATURED ON NPR’S “WORLD CAFE
TOURING NORTH AMERICA THIS SPRING

Tales of America, the debut album from breakout singer-songwriter J.S. Ondara, is out now via Verve Forecast. The album is receiving widespread critical acclaim:

“Singing songs about America through his unique perspective and stunning voice.”

“…a clear-eyed acoustic newcomer’s tale of American promise and calamity that establishes him as an invigorating new voice in American folk music.”

“It’s that sense of searching combined with Ondara’s spellbinding and, well, haunting voice that makes this an early contender for one of the finest and most
moving Americana albums of the year.”

“Ondara owns a striking singing voice, which ranges from a velvety croon to an immaculate upper-register. Really, you’ve just got to hear it yourself.”

Ondara also recently appeared on NPR’s “World Café. Watch/listen HERE.

Tales of America is a completely acoustic album produced by Grammy-nominated Mike Viola (Jenny Lewis). The LP was recorded at Boulevard Recording and East West Studios in Los Angeles, with all lyrics written by Ondara and featuring collaborations with Andrew Bird, Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes and Joey Ryan of The Milk Carton Kids.

Watch the previously released videos for “American DreamHERE, “Saying GoodbyeHERE and “Torch SongHERE.

To celebrate Tales of America’s release, Ondara kicks off a North American headlining tour next month. The tour follows last year’s dates supporting Lindsey Buckingham and will make stops in Washington DC, Brooklyn, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Los Angeles and more. See below for details.
J.S. Ondara grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, listening to American alt-rock and making up his own songs for as long as he can remember. At an early age, he fell in love with the music of Bob Dylan and moved to Minneapolis in 2013 to pursue a career as a singer and songwriter. He began making his way in the local music scene, continually writing songs about what he saw, felt and experienced in a place far different from home. Since then, he has toured nationwide, opening for Anderson East, First Aid Kit, The Milk Carton Kids, Mt. Joy and The Head & The Heart.

Iconic music legend and humanitarian Steven Tyler celebrated his second annual GRAMMY Awards® Viewing Party to benefit Janie’s Fund with over 500 friends and supporters including Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Alice Cooper, and more at Raleigh Studios Hollywood. Hosted by Jane Lynch, the exclusive gala featured a live viewing of the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, three-course dinner by Crumble Catering, and an epic night of music with America’s all-time top-selling rock ‘n’ roll band, Aerosmith.

The second annual event raised over $2.8 million dollars for Janie’s Fund, a philanthropic initiative created by Steven Tyler in partnership with Youth Villages, one of America’s leading nonprofits, to bring hope and healing to girls who have suffered the trauma of abuse and neglect. Tyler first gave voice to this cause with his hit “Janie’s Got a Gun,” and his establishment of the fund ensures that these vulnerable girls will have an enduring voice for years to come. Since the November 2015 launch of Janie’s Fund, the organization has raised nearly $8 million, directly helping more than 800 girls and providing more than 115,000 days of therapeutic care.

AUTHORIZED TARANTINO DOC FREED
FROM WEINSTEIN WRECKAGE
Conclusion of Year-Long Legal Battle Restores Rights to Wood Entertainment, Currently Seeking New Distribution

Los Angeles, CA February 14, 2019—Director Tara Wood has successfully reclaimed the rights to the authorized Quentin Tarantino documentary feature, “21 Years: Quentin Tarantino”. The film, a celebration of Tarantino’s works-to-date, looks at the passion behind the worldwide box office dominator. The lightening rod that is Tarantino’s career illuminates the discussion of changes in the industry.

In 2017, Wood, co-director of 2014’s acclaimed “21 Years: Richard Linklater”, asked The Weinstein Co. to release the documentary following the onslaught of sexual harassment allegations against company founder Harvey Weinstein. “TWC should respectfully release us from our deal,” Wood said in a statement at the time, “To allow the project to be handled with the care and consideration it, Mr. Tarantino, and all the participants deserve.” The company refused, and Wood embarked on a prolonged legal battle.

Now, Wood is proud to announce that the film has returned to the creative team at Wood Entertainment, and is ready to find the right home for distribution.

“We are thrilled, and eager to conduct our final interviews and complete the documentary, free from Harvey Weinstein and his complicit cohorts” said Wood last week. “We look forward to finding a new distribution partner, timed with the July 2019 release of Quentin’s next film, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.”

Quentin Tarantino’s career is unmatched in its wellspring of talent and the diversity of subjects in his eight films to date. In the trendsetting RESERVOIR DOGS and the ground-breaking PULP FICTION, Tarantino revolutionized the status quo. He reworked genre and celebrated badass women in films like JACKIE BROWN, KILL BILL and the gasoline-charged DEATH PROOF. He took on issues of race in America in DJANGO UNCHAINED and boldly rewrote history in INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, leaving us snowbound in the ultimate “who done it” murder mystery, THE HATEFUL 8. His films reap as much controversy as they do accolades. The documentary coincides with the end of an era – the collaboration of Tarantino with the now disgraced Harvey Weinstein.

Longtime staple Tarantino collaborators speak to the essence of his passion and the success of his career: Michael Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jamie Foxx, Eli Roth, Zoë Bell, Robert Forster, Diane Kruger, Kurt Russell, Louis Black, Richard Gladstein, Scott Speigel, and Stacey Sher.

Wood concluded, “This project has always been in honor of Mr. Tarantino’s career, and as a woman, creator and protector of that vision, I am grateful to have it back in caring, respectful hands.”

TITLE TRACK AVAILABLE NOW
FEATURING RUFUS WAINWRIGHT, BARRY HUMPHRIES, THE VON TRAPPS AND MICHEL LEGRAND
NORTH AMERICAN TOUR STOPS CONFIRMED

Thomas Lauderdale, the founder and bandleader of beloved Portland, Oregon-based little orchestra Pink Martini and “post-modern chanteuse” (The Boston Globe) Meow Meow have joined forces for Hotel Amour, their highly anticipated joint album due March 22 via Heinz Records. The title track is now available for streaming and sharing HERE.

The product of a decades-long friendship, artistic collaboration and songwriting partnership, the long-awaited album also features special guests Rufus Wainwright, Barry Humphries (of Dame Edna fame) and The von Trapps, plus a special live recording with legendary pianist and composer Michel Legrand.

A musical love affair between two singular artists, Hotel Amour features new original songs alongside journeys into the French, German and Shanghainese canon of the 20th century—encompassing bittersweet tragedy, humor, politics, witty wicked Weimar and aching French torch songs. Of the album, Meow Meow says, “The sound will be both familiar and exotic to both my fans and those of Pink Martini—a true collaboration between two passionate artists with converging and diverging inspirations, but above all an obsession with the joy of sharing special music. I think it really is a collection of songs—both originals and covers—that range from little historical gems we have polished to others that we have written our hearts and souls into.”

Together the two friends have performed and composed across the globe, sharing stages ranging from the backstreet bars of Berlin and Portland, Oregon’s infamous strip club, Mary’s Club, to the legendary Sydney Opera House and London’s Royal Albert Hall. They will tour in support of the album this spring, and then Meow Meow—who is also set to appear in the upcoming star-studded film adaptation of the musical Cats—will join Pink Martini on a U.S. tour in the fall. TENILLE TOWNES NAMED
IHEARTCOUNTRY’S “ON THE VERGE” ARTIST

ON TOUR NOW WITH DIERKS BENTLEY

Emerging singer, songwriter and performer Tenille Townes is iHeartCountry’s next “On The Verge” artist. The program includes on-air exposure, which has already led to a lift for Townes’ debut single “Somebody’s Daughter,” as well as significant digital and social support across iHeartMedia’s network of country radio stations and websites. The program has proven instrumental in the development of such successful and highly credible artists such as Sam Hunt, Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Mitchell Tenpenny and Cam. In celebration of this honor, Townes will perform on the iHeartCountry Festival stage at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX on May 4.

This recognition adds to what is already proving a breakthrough year for Townes, whose single, “Somebody’s Daughter,” recently debuted #1 on both Mediabase and Nielsen BDS Country Airplay charts in Canada. This makes Townes the first Canadian country artist to have their debut single go to #1 in the Mediabase Canada era. She’s also only the second Canadian artist to top the Nielsen BDS Country Airplay chart with their first charted song and the first since Carolyn Dawn Johnson’s “Georgia” in 2000.

Townes was also recently selected as one of Amazon Music’s “2019 Artists To Watch,” CMT’s “Next Women of Country,” iHeart Radio’s “Artists To Watch in 2019” as well as being included in The Bobby Bones Show’s “Class of 2019,” CMT’s “Listen Up” and the inaugural class of “Opry NextStage.” Townes continues to garner widespread attention including recent praise at The Tennessean, Refinery29, Wide Open Country and Sounds Like Nashville.

Moreover, NPR Music featured Townes as part of their “Best Music of 2018” coverage, hailing her as, “one of the most promising arrivals in mainstream Nashville’s burgeoning singer-songwriter movement…Townes channels ardent empathy into her observational narratives, and her performances begin with fluttery intimacy, then flare with warmth and intensity,” while Rolling Stone named her Living Room Worktapes EP one of the “10 Best Country EPs of 2018” heralding, “Tenille Townes makes a strong case for being country’s most promising young songwriter with this devastating EP.”

2019 will see the release of Townes’ highly anticipated full-length debut album on Columbia Nashville. Produced by Jay Joyce, “Somebody’s Daughter” has already been the subject of widespread attention—CMT.com asserts, “[it] embodies elements of the astute storytelling that Bobbie Gentry mastered in her classic ‘Ode to Billie Joe,’” while Taste of Country proclaims, “her debut single is a life-changer.”

In celebration of the debut, Townes is currently touring with Dierks Bentley on his extensive “Burning Man Tour.” The tour, which kicked off January 17 at Hamilton, ON’s FirstOntario Centre, features performances across Canada and the U.S., including stops at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena and Columbus’ Nationwide Arena among many others. Additionally, she will perform select dates this March in Australia as part of the international “CMA: Introducing Nashville” series.

Canadian-born and Nashville-based, Townes first made her public appearance at age nine alongside Shania Twain after being invited to sing on stage at a concert she attended with her parents. In addition to her work as a musician and songwriter, Townes remains committed to charitable causes including her own initiative, Big Hearts For Big Kids, which has raised over $1.5 million to date benefiting a youth shelter in her hometown of Grande Prairie, Alberta. More information can be found at bigheartsforbigkids.com.

AIR JORDAN DOCUMENTARY UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 TO MAKE EXCLUSIVE STREAMING DEBUT ON HULU

Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 starts streaming Thursday, February 14 on Hulu

SANTA MONICA, CA (February 13, 2019) – Hulu and Lionsgate today announce that UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1, the powerful and inspiring true story of how Air Jordan 1 (AJ1) transcended sport to become a global phenomenon, will stream exclusively on Hulu.  From first time filmmaker Dexton Deboree, the documentary interviews culture-defining titans, including NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan himself, Quincy Jones, Spike Lee, Lena Waithe, Carmelo Anthony, Chuck D, and Phil Knight among others, to explore how AJ1 was not just a sneaker, but a worldwide movement that broke through barriers of race, age, and gender to define the culture in which we now live. Lionsgate acquired the documentary which is set to make its exclusive streaming debut on Hulu on February 14.

“Sneaker fans all over the world remember the thrill of getting their first pair of Air Jordans, and this film explores the story behind and incredible impact of that iconic shoe,” said Heather Moosnick, Senior Vice President Content Partnerships, Hulu. “At Hulu, we’re focused on bringing highly compelling films and series to our viewers that reflect the culture and inspire conversation – and UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 is exactly that.”

“We were thrilled to get behind Dexton’s captivating film exploring the cultural phenomenon of the AJ1,” said Jared Goetz, Lionsgate President of North American Television Distribution. “With Hulu’s longstanding commitment to premium quality content, we’ve found the perfect partner to launch this film.”

This is the story of Air Jordan 1, the shoe that tapped a cultural nerve deep inside a generation, unlocked the voice of so many voiceless and transcended sports to become a global phenomenon. Beyond the shoe’s iconic image and deeper than the legend of its namesake – Michael Jordan – UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 explores AJ1’s role in giving birth to sneaker culture, re-shaping the game of basketball and the very identity of the NBA. It revolutionized the business of the professional athlete as a brand and radically disrupted a generation to define our modern global culture on and off the court. Through a riveting journey of powerful voices that also include Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, actor Anthony Anderson, DJ and record producer DJ Khaled across all aspects of culture from then and now, the film chronicles the shoe’s explosive impact on history and our modern world.

“I’m excited for the world to witness a story that breaks some rules and explores some new ground in expressing a tale as remarkable as any great fable we’ve heard or seen before,” said writer/director Dexton Deboree. “This film unearths a very powerful story that is beneath a cultural icon to share something that transcends sport, sneakers, and the popular zeitgeist of much of what happened not only with AJ1 and even Michael Jordan himself, but the radical cultural revolution that unfolded in its wake.”

UNBANNED: THE LEGEND OF AJ1 chronicles the dawn of the sneaker craze and the sneaker’s explosive cultural impact on music, fashion, art, and entertainment through powerful voices of then and now. The film is produced by Dexton Deboree and Stef Fink.

The Handmaid’s Tale Author Margaret Atwood and #MeToo Founder Tarana Burke Join Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Filmmaker Ava DuVernay as “VH1 Trailblazer Honors” Recipients

Landmark Event to Air Friday, March 8th at 9PM on International Women’s Day

(NEW YORK, NY – February 13, 2019) The author behind The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood and #MeToo founder and activist Tarana Burke will join previously announced Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Academy Award nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay on the list of vanguards whom “VH1 Trailblazer Honors” will celebrate to kick off Women’s History Month. Global Superstar Rita Ora is also set to perform her personal anthem “Soul Survivor”. The one-hour special will air on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8th at 9PM ET/PT, on VH1 and Logo.

Margaret Atwood is the author of more than fifty books of fiction, poetry and critical essays. She is best-known for her modern classic The Handmaid’s Tale, now a critically acclaimed television series. Her most recent novels include The Heart Goes Last and the MaddAddam trilogy – the Giller and Booker Prize-shortlisted Oryx and Crake, and The Year of the Flood.  In addition to her success as a writer, Atwood is also committed to being active through various philanthropic endeavors. In 2018, Equality Now honored Atwood as a longtime advocate of women’s rights. She continues to use her platform to aid victims of sexual assault and advocates for gender equality and human rights. She was also one of seventeen authors to sell naming rights to characters from their works to raise money for the Freedom from Torture, a charity that provides therapy and support for torture victims.

For more than 25 years, activist and advocate Tarana Burke has worked at the intersection of racial justice, arts and culture and sexual violence. Fueled by commitments to interrupt sexual violence and other systemic inequalities disproportionately impacting marginalized people, particularly black women and girls, Burke has created and led various campaigns focused on increasing access to resources and support for impacted communities, including the ‘me too’ movement. In 2003 she co-founded Just Be Inc., an organization committed to the leadership development and wellness of Black girls. In 2006 she began working with students in the Black Belt using ‘me too’ as a tool for healing, education and action. In the years following, the ‘me too’ movement quickly expanded beyond young people to include adult women and men, queer and trans folks and all marginalized groups.  In October 2017 #metoo became a viral phenomenon that quickly spread around the world and Burke has emerged as a global leader in the evolving conversation around sexual violence and the need for survivor-centered solutions. Her theory of using empathy to empower survivors is changing the way the nation and the world thinks about and engages with survivors. Burke was named Time Magazine 2017 Person of the Year along with the ‘Silence Breakers’, a group recognized for standing up against sexual harassment and violence. In 2018, she was featured on the covers of Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and Variety Magazine’s Power of Women issue. She is the recipient of the Ridenhour Prize, The Change Makers Award from Black Girls Rock and topped the 2018 The Root 100 list as the most influential African American.

“VH1 Trailblazer Honors” will celebrate today’s most respected politicians, entertainers, artists, activists, allies and icons who have dedicated their time and steadfast commitments to the women’s movement and beyond.  Centered around this year’s incredible breakthroughs in female empowerment and human rights, the annual event will feature the landmark achievements of its honorees. Additional talent to be announced.

“VH1 Trailblazer Honors” will take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, a National Historic Landmark and extension of the Ebell of Los Angeles, a 125-year-old organization founded by women for women.

GUNPOWDER & SKY’S DUST PRESENTS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DOCUMENTARY, MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN

Tommy Pallotta and Femke Wolting’s Feature-Length Expose Exploring the Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Its Effect on Our Lives To Premiere on TVOD Platforms, February 12

DUST Also Announces Week-Long A.I. Themed Programming Event, A.I. Week, Premiering Short Films; “Sunspring”, “The Manual”, “Upload U” and “Noro”

Los Angeles, CA – February 8, 2019 – Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi label DUST announced today that Tommy Pallotta (A Scanner Darkly) and Femke Wolting’s (Nobody Speak) feature-length Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) documentary, More Human Than Human, is set to release on TVOD platforms February 12th. The premiere is timed with A.I. Week, DUST’s weeklong programming event that focuses on the stories, science and implications of artificial intelligence, running February 11th through February 17th, across DUST channels.

Debuting as the main event, More Human Than Human is the only feature-length film among the array of short films to premiere during A.I. Week. Originally premiering at last year’s SXSW Film Festival, More Human Than Human invites audiences into the filmmakers’ journey as they come face-to-face with the world’s leading A.I. experts and robot pioneers and notable test subjects such as the greatest chess player of all time Garry Kasparov who famously played the computer system Deep Blue; acclaimed filmmaker, Richard Linklater and best-selling author, Daniel H Wilson. Pallotta and Wolting are confronted with the existential question that artificial intelligence begs us to ask – will A.I., infinitely smarter, interconnected and possibly self-aware, render humanity obsolete?

“Computers have become not only ubiquitous but also so intimate with us that it has fundamentally changed all of our relationships,” said filmmakers, Pallotta and Wolting. “We are at a pivotal moment in time when we already coexist with intelligent machines. As children we thought the future was going to be bright. That we would have all of this great technology, and that it was going to fix all of our problems. Technology has made life better in many ways, but we are starting to see a dark side to this rush to automation. Why is this dream of technology so seductive to us? Why would we aspire to build something that is better than ourselves? This project was born out of love for sci-fi and our passion to make science fiction, so DUST was the perfect fit and partner for the film.”

Eric Bromberg, General Manager of DUST added, “More Human Than Human shines a light on the promising applications of artificial intelligence, but also the potentially unsettling realities. LOS ANGELES (February 8, 2019) – Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment is pleased to announce the North American release of BROKEN GHOST. Written by ABE POGOS & CATHERINE HILL (SUGAR MOUNTAIN) this captivating and haunting film tells the story of one girl’s struggle with bullies and her rise to confront her demons, starring SCOTTIE THOMPSON(12 MONKEYS, THE BLACK LIST, STAR TREK). The talented female-driven cast is further bolstered by NICK FARNELL (WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, THE MULE), DEVON BAGBY(RAY DONOVAN) JOY BRUNSON (THIS IS US, SHAMELESS), GEORGE GRIFFITH (TWIN PEAKS)and introduces a stellar performance by up-and-comer AUTRY HAYDON-WILSON.

Directed by the prolific RICHARD GRAY(THE LOOKALIKE, SUGAR MOUNTAIN, ROBERT THE BRUCE), BROKEN GHOST focuses on a family desperate to leave behind their past secrets for a fresh start in a small town in Montana.

“We’re thrilled that folks are going to be able to experience our movie, we had a ball making it” said Gray. “I was so taken by the originality of the script. Imogen’s story of rising above harrowing bullying and depression really took hold of me, and to be able to tell it on such a large canvas. I love ghost stories, but the human elements, including the empowerment of the female leads in BROKEN GHOSTare what make the film so special to us.”

“The entire Film Mode Entertainment team is excited to be working with Richie Gray and the Yellow Brick Films team again on another enthralling film that raises the genre bar to the next level.” Said Epstein. “With his keen sense of taught storytelling and perfectly placed scares, and a remarkable cast that draws the audience in from the start, we are looking forward to moviegoers across North America having the opportunity to see the film for themselves.”

Desperate for a new life, Imogen (HAYDON-WILSON) and her family move to Montana in an attempt to escape a secretive past from the big city. Eager to make a new life for herself, Imogen must overcome new tormentors, old secrets, and a strange presence in the attic. In one girl’s fight to rise up, this family eventually discovers that the ghosts of their pasts are not the only ones they have to deal with.

“A brilliantly humane story of rock-and-roll, addiction, and redemption.”
– Emily Yoshida, NEW YORK MAGAZINE – VULTURE

“Formally audacious and ferociously intelligent, Her Smell is Perry’s greatest achievement yet, a wild saga of prestige and madness.”
 Natalia Winkelman, THE DAILY BEAST

Superbly written and directed. A ferocious, never-better Elisabeth Moss as a rock star gone to hell and back.
– Justin Chang, LOS ANGELES TIMES

**Official Selection: 2019 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL **

Official Selection: 2018 NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL**
**Official Selection: 2018 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL**

Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss) is a ’90s punk rock superstar who once filled arenas with her grungy all-female trio Something She. Now she plays smaller venues while grappling with motherhood, exhausted bandmates, nervous record company executives, and a new generation of rising talent eager to usurp her stardom. When Becky’s chaos and excesses derail a recording session and national tour, she finds herself shunned, isolated and alone. Forced to get sober, temper her demons, and reckon with the past, she retreats from the spotlight and tries to recapture the creative inspiration that led her band to success.

Anchored by a towering, unflinching performance from Golden Globe and Emmy winner Moss, and supported by a stellar ensemble cast, Her Smell examines the grit, grace and gravitas of an unforgettable fictional rock star crashing down to earth into the harsh realities of life. With his incendiary and deeply humane sixth feature, writer-director Alex Ross Perry (Listen Up Philip, Golden Exits) pumps up the volume and shines a light on the terrifying moment when superstardom wanes – and quiet becomes the new loud.

Everything changed for Cornelius Walker on November 27, 2000 when Damilola Taylor was killed in what became one of the UK’s most high-profile murder cases. Damilola was 11 – the same age as Cornelius. He lived five minutes away. He had the same skin color. Cornelius’ mother, scared for her son’s safety, moved their family out of London. Cornelius suddenly found himself living on a white estate run by a white gang.

Racism ruled. And Cornelius soon found himself the target of extreme verbal and physical racial abuse. But rather than fight back, Cornelius decided to become more like the people who hated him. He started to wear the same clothes they wore. He changed his accent. He straightened his hair and wore bright blue contact lenses. He even started to bleach his skin – Cornelius tried to become white.

The white gang became his family and kept him safe. And in return, Cornelius became submerged in a culture of violence and hatred. But as the violence and racism against other blacks continued, Cornelius struggled to marry his real identity with the one he had acquired. Filmed with non-actors in the same locations where the real events took place 15 years ago, BLACK SHEEP blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction to pose difficult and highly topical questions about race and identity. Who decides what makes us who we are? And what compromises are we prepared to make in order to fit in?

From the Academy Award® winning producer of MAN ON WIRE and SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN, this is a story about fractured identity and the things we do to survive.

BLACK SHEEP is now streaming on the Guardian website here. This is the first time a Guardian-commissioned documentary has been nominated for an Oscar® nominated
BLACK SHEEP
is also the only European film nominated in the Documentary Short Subject category this year.

DIPLO DEBUTS “NEW SHAPES” FEATURING OCTAVIAN
EUROPA EP DUE FEBRUARY 22

Diplo debuts “New Shapes” with BBC Sound of 2019 winner Octavian today—listen here. The track follows “Boom Bye Bye” featuring French rapper Niska and is the latest offering from Diplo’s forthcoming EP, Europa, due February 22 on Mad Decent.

“I met Octavian at a party in London. We took a photo and I never thought I would see the kid again,” Diplo says. “Over the next six months I kept hearing his name and seeing him on great songs. I tried to stay in touch even though he had another twelve phone numbers since we met. Finally, he was stuck in L.A. for a while and it was easy to pull up on him. After a few weeks we nailed this song and I’m glad it gets to finally see the light of day. Big up to Jim-E Stack for producing this with me.”

Europa is a love letter to the continent where Diplo cut his teeth as a DJ and producer—from his early days playing at Notting Hill Carnival to DJ sets at Fabric—before breaking into the stratosphere to become one of the world’s biggest and most influential artists.

Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz, is one of the most dynamic forces in music today under his own name, as well as a member of the now legendary Major Lazer, LSD with Sia and Labrinth—whose first four singles have tallied nearly a billion streams, and Silk City with Mark Ronson—whose “Electricity” with Dua Lipa topped charts worldwide and is nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. As the world’s most in-demand producer, Diplo has worked with artists as disparate as Beyoncé, Bad Bunny and Turnstile. Europa is the first new body of work from Diplo since his California EP released last year. He continues to tour the world over.

20th Century Faux presents:
16 Comedy Shorts
About Loneliness

Worldwide VOD launch Feb 26

20th Century Faux is a short film series created by Will Blank & Jake Bradbury.

Jake and Will moved to Los Angeles with the dream of making feature films. They made award-winning shorts and worked on other people’s features and television projects. But then, like so many others, they found themselves bogged down in the never-ending development process. 20th Century Faux is their antidote. Instead of waiting for permission to make films, or trying to organize a massive crew and financing, with 20th Century Faux, Jake and Will opted for a minimalist approach. Their plan was to come up with – and execute – 16 short films that could be conceptualized, written and shot in a single day (one short per day), working with friends, and using whatever resources were available.

The result is a series of surprisingly empathetic, funny, and oftentimes absurdist short takes (1-4 minutes) by and about millenials. Distinct themes emerge; one that dominates is the experience of living in a time of dislocated hyper-modernity, and the self-help channels and techniques designed to combat the isolation of living through screens. In the films of 20th Century Faux, everything and everyone is a bit sad and desperate… so you might as well laugh at it.

Others present more light-hearted takes on the daily grind, the search for love and self-knowledge. Sex is explored in… surprising ways. The idea of escape is seen in the forms of drugs, VR, and quality time spent with oneself in nature. Blank, Bradbury and co., explore these “heavy” topics with a funny and ultimately empathetic take on the millennial experience.

Blank’s previous short film, LIMBO, starred Raul Castillo opposite Sam Elliott as the voice of an animatronic dog. Shot on 35mm film, it is a stark but moving adaptation of a graphic novella by comic book artist Marian Churchland. After a successful run of North America’s top genre festivals, including Fantasia, Fantastic, and Toronto After Dark, during which it garnered several awards, the film won the prestigious CineGear Independent Short Film Competition.

What carries over from LIMBO to this new group of shorts, is a grounded yet fantastical tone, best described by Scott Beggs at Nerdist as “just a hint of absurdity, winked at by the filmmakers, even as both Castillo and Elliott offer arid deadpan.”

Praise for Limbo:

“Excellent short.” – Guillermo del Toro

“A beautifully executed fantasy short concluding with an unexpected philosophical gut punch.” – Scott Macauley, Filmmaker Magazine

“A stunner that asks (and perhaps even answers) some big questions with the maximum of elegance and the minimum of time.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire

Release Schedule/platforms:

The 16 films will be released over the course of one month, four films each week, beginning Feb 26, on Facebook, Vimeo, and Youtube. Each week’s drop of new films will be accompanied by a podcast with series creators Will Blank and Jake Bradbury, where they will give insight into the films, their influences and aims, and the production process that went into that week’s films. The podcasts will be available on iTunes.

INTRODUCING KENNYHOOPLA VIDEO FOR “LOST CAUSE” PREMIERES ON ONES TO WATCH

CONFIRMS SELECT TOUR DATES SUPPORTING YOSHI FLOWER

Emerging artist and performer KennyHoopla’s video (produced by Damien Blue and Cody Laplant) for his song, “Lost Cause,” premieres today on Ones To Watch, who proclaim, “KennyHoopla is a perfectly indescribable enigma that we simply cannot get enough of.” Watch/share it here: https://youtu.be/RI4h-cs450o

Of the video, Blue and Laplant says, ““Lost Cause’ is a portrait of a beautiful soul, full of both passion and tumult. Kenny’s expressiveness already steals the show; the grim gray-scale industrial locations that we chose (mixed with gloomy weather) are simple supporting elements to Kenny’s mood, while still managing to keep him at the center of attention. Kenny’s unmatched aura is authentic and cinematic by nature—curating the right ‘visual stage’ for him was and is our mission.”

“Lost Cause” has been featured on Spotify’s “Fresh Finds,” “Alternative R&B” and “Anti-Pop” playlists. The track sets the stage for more to come from KennyHoopla as he gears up to release new music in 2019.

Additionally, KennyHoopla has confirmed select tour dates in February supporting Yoshi Flower including performances at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere, Los Angeles’ Moroccan Lounge, San Francisco’s Rickshaw Stop and more. See below for a complete list of tour dates.

Kenneth La’ron, known by his stage name as KennyHoopla, is an LA-based recording artist and songwriter. His music is intimate, thoughtful and self-labeled as “new wave nostalgia.”

KennyHoopla has performed alongside Injury Reserve, Jack Harlow, Omar Apollo, Trapo, Yung Gravy and Alex Wiley.

SAVE A CHILD’S HEART PRESENTS “MYSTERY OF THE HEART” GALA

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, AT UCLA ROYCE HALL

Honorees: Dr. Hillel Laks and Jeff Frost

Presenters:  Freddie Highmore, Lisa Edelstein (Host) and many others

Performing: Lior Suchard, Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts Band,
Voices of Hope Children’s Choir
and others

Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) presents “Mystery of the Heart,”a benefit evening featuring world-renowned Israeli mentalist and incredible performer Lior Suchard, with special guest star Freddie Highmore (“The Good Doctor,” “Bates Motel,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”), exciting musical performances and special celebrities. Save a Child’s Heart treats children with little chance of surviving to adulthood without lifesaving medical care, and does so without regard to race, religion or ethnicity.

Save A Child’s Heart (SACH) is Israel’s preeminent humanitarian organization specializing in charitable pediatric cardiac care and from the money raised will provide urgently needed pediatric heart surgery and follow-up care for indigent children from developing countries where the heart surgery they need is unobtainable.

The SACH Lifetime Professional Achievement Award will be presented to distinguished UCLA Chancellor’s Professor of Surgery Dr. Hillel Laks. Dr. Laks is internationally recognized for his pioneering surgical approaches to complex heart disease. He has donated his skills and support to children worldwide through humanitarian missions, traveling to Russia, Peru, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and many other countries to perform complex heart surgeries. Dr. Laks, actively involved with Save a Child’s Heart, will be participating in an upcoming international medical mission and additional SACH professional projects.

Jeff Frost is receiving the SACH International Humanitarian Achievement Award. Frost serves as president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, overseeing all U.S. production and programming for Sony Pictures Television (SPT). Current productions include “The Good Doctor,” “The Blacklist,” “The Goldbergs,” “Outlander,” and “Sneaky Pete.” Jeff Frost has been a friend and supporter of “The Good Doctor.” Sony has a vision and Jeff Frost personifies it.  Viewers from all over the world are entertained and changed by the Sony shows. Jeff is also involved with Mending Kids, a non-profit that his wife Lesley chairs. His contributions led to a medical mission to Africa, healing children from life-threatening illnesses. And of course we are grateful for his support of Save A Child’s Heart.

David and Judy Shore are devoted to SACH and the children the foundation has helped. Originally from Canada, and a former lawyer, David Shore has been writing and producing for television for more than 20 years. He currently serves as executive producer and showrunner on the hit ABC drama “The Good Doctor.” Prior to that, he created the groundbreaking medical drama “House,” which ran on Fox for eight seasons. Shore’s work on “House” earned him several Emmy nominations for producing. He won the Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series” as well as the Humanitas Prize and the Writers Guild of America Award.

David and Judy Shore are on the board of Save a Child’s Heart. Judy is the national co-chair. They fell in love with the organization when they were touring Israel with the cast from “House” several years ago. “The trip organizers took us to the hub of Save A Child’s Heart at the Wolfson Hospital in Holon, where doctors volunteer their time and perform lifesaving heart surgery on children from developing countries, including the Palestinian territories,” said Shore. Judy and David were surprised and moved by what they saw and couldn’t wait to get home and tell people all about it. “It’s a hidden gem,” says Shore. “In the waiting room we saw Arab parents alongside Israeli parents alongside African parents. No one cared about politics, or cultural or ethnic differences. All these parents wanted was for their children to be cured, to live a long life. We loved what we saw. This incredible melting pot of people; it was a mini UN. We see these children, their parents and doctors as doves of peace.”

In addition to honorees, Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts Band and “America’s Got Talent” semifinalists Voices of Hope Children’s Choir will perform.

Hosting the event is Lisa Edelstein(“House,” “The Good Doctor,” “The Kominsky Method”).

About Save A Child’s Heart (SACH)

Every 29 hours, our doctors save a child’s life in our medical facilities in Israel, or on medical missions in partner countries around the world.Thousands of children from poor families around the world are alive today because of a small group of medical professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to perform life-saving cardiac surgery and train local medical personnel. All children, regardless of race, religion, sex, color, or financial status receive the best possible care that modern medicine has to offer. SACH saves children with congenital heart defects, who have almost no chance of surviving to adulthood in their native countries, and saves their lives with no political, cultural, religious, or racial preference whatsoever.

Save A Child’s Heart also works to multiply the effectiveness of its resources outside of Israel by training medical personnel from developing countries. The ultimate goal of SACH is actually to create “Centers of Competence” around the world, which will enable local medical personnel to provide these life-saving services on their own. This is a full outreach training program that brings doctors and nurses to the SACH center for in-depth, postgraduate training; it also sends staff overseas to provide this education to local medical professionals, as well as to perform surgeries side-by-side with them. Until our ultimate goal is achieved, children with congenital heart defects will continue to be brought to Israel for surgery and other cardiac care. More than 4000 children from more than fifty countries have already been saved directly by SACH personnel, while thousands more are receiving the life-saving treatments they need from local personnel who were previously trained by SACH. We have trained Tanzania’s first pediatric cardiac surgeon, and we are in the process of training Ethiopia’s first pediatric cardiac surgeon. Construction has begun on a new Children’s Hospital at the Wolfson Medical Center that will house the Middle East’s first international pediatric cardiac care center.

Created by the Just-Announced Oscar-Nominated Screenwriters Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz, “Madness” Delves into the Inner Workings of a College Basketball Program

LOS ANGELES, CA – February 6, 2019 – Gunpowder & Sky, the global content studio, announced today that they have partnered with Oscar-nominated Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz (BlacKkKlansman, nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay), to develop “Madness”, a new drama series about the world of college basketball.

‘Madness’ follows the corrupt inner workings of a prestigious college basketball program through the eyes of its new assistant coach. With a “House of Cards” feel, “Madness” reveals the repercussions the team must face after their head coach makes a bad deal.

“In BlacKkKlansman, Charlie and David were able to tap into the current national zeitgeist through the artful telling of an unknown story from American history,” said Cody Zwieg, SVP of Production and Development at Gunpowder & Sky. “They are treasure hunters of sorts, seeking out and spinning the undiscovered stories that resonate with the social climate of today. For Gunpowder & Sky this is a golden opportunity.”

With the celebrity that comes from being a college basketball player, it’s easy for the rest of the world to forget that they’re also just regular students trying to make it to graduation, navigate classes, maintain a decent grade point average and juggle a social life. “Madness” will not only shed light on the humanity of these elite college athletes, but also delve deeper into the dark underbelly of this clandestine organization.

“‘Madness’ is a sports story told through the lens of a crime drama,” said Wachtel. “Who are those powerful-looking college basketball coaches, with their suits, their slicked-back hair, and their seven figure salaries? What’s it like to be a college freshman suddenly thrust into the national spotlight? And what if the forces behind these multi-million dollar machines were not so different from those behind organized crime? In our world of college sports, there are rules to follow, a hierarchy of power, and real consequences for failure.”

Added Rabinowitz, “With ‘Madness’ we hope to shine a light on the dark underbelly of college athletics, from the morally-compromised coaches to the conflicted players. It’s a story of opportunity, choices, and greed. We’re thrilled to be working with Gunpowder & Sky, who has a record of working on projects that take chances and not compromising their vision. They knew immediately the kind of show we sought to create and have been incredibly supportive of our vision. It’s been a dream of ours to see this show take flight.”

This news follows a series of Gunpowder & Sky announcements including a partnership with Zelda Williams to adapt her short film, Shrimp into a series, along with acquiring the rights to the acclaimed youth novel, Ms. Bixby’s Last Day to adapt it into a feature film with Walden Media. Most recently, Gunpowder & Sky partnered with Tigerlily Productions to develop a new comedy series “Assets”.

ABOUT LUCKY DAYE:
Born and raised in New Orleans, he spent his formative years in a religious cult—of which his mother was a member. Barred from any and all “secular music,” he taught himself melodies by singing Bible verses and Dr. Seuss rhymes. Once mom fled the cult, life quieted until Hurricane Katrina hit and literally washed life as he knew it away. The family fled to Tyler, TX, but Lucky aimed to launch a career in music. He made his way to Atlanta, where he spent some time recording before seeking a brighter future in music and road tripping to LA. Once there, he met D’Mile and crafted Painted, which takes you through a journey of Lucky’s life experiences.

Released under Keep Cool/RCA Records, his story unfolds by way of the smoky full-spectrum R&B on the record. With the release of Painted, Lucky enters the music world with a powerful debut, leaving his footprint and fortifying the groundwork to become the next rising star in R&B.
