Yesterday was a marquee event at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal with the 35th annual Just for Laughs Awards taking place. The event honored Trevor Noah as Comedy Person of the Year who gave an appreciative nod to fellow honoree, Jim Carrey, this year’s recipient of the Generation Award, for his candidness about the issue of depression within the comedy industry. Carrey was presented the night’s biggest award by Judd Apatow who earned laughs for recalling the first time he met the comedy legend, just a nervous and star struck fresh-faced comic first on the scene, and Carrey called him a “narc.”
The full list of awards given out at the 35th edition, including:
Trevor Noah (Comedy Person of the Year), presented by Jeff Ross
Jim Carrey (Generation Award), presented by Judd Apatow
Mike Birbiglia (Stand-Up Comedian of the Year), presented by Jimmy Carr
Ali Wong (Breakout Comedy Star of the Year), presented by W. Kamau Bell
Craig Ferguson (Alumni Tribute), presented by Jay Baruchel
Kenya Barris (Comedy Writer of the Year), presented by Natasha Leggero
Another standout festival highlight from the day included Jane Krakowski opening her gala with a surprise appearance by her Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-star Tituss Burgess who joined her on stage for a performance of Judy Garland’s “Get Happy.”
